Printable PVC cards are not all the same. A white PVC card for an inkjet printer is different from a thermal transfer card or a UV card. Black PVC, holographic PVC, and brushed PVC follow their own routes.
Buying by appearance or price leads to problems: cards may not feed, prints may not stick, or results may not match.
Choose the printer or process first, then confirm the card material, surface, and structure.
Start by identifying what equipment or process you have available. If you are using an inkjet printer, begin with inkjet PVC cards or PVC A4 sheets. If you have a thermal transfer printer or an ID card printer, choose thermal transfer PVC cards. For UV printing workflows, select UV PVC cards or special PVC finishes (black, holographic, brushed). If you are personalizing metal cards without a printer, plan for UV printing, laser processing, or etching depending on your design goals.
The surface finish you choose depends on your final appearance goal and your equipment. For full-color printing on white PVC, select the surface optimized for your printer type (inkjet, thermal transfer, ribbon/color, or UV). If you want high contrast, black PVC offers a dark background and is available only for UV printing. For visual texture effects, holographic and brushed finishes are also UV-only options. If you are printing full sheets and cutting them later, use PVC A4 sheets, which are currently available for inkjet printing only. For metal cards, you can achieve different effects through UV printing for full-color graphics, laser processing for marked or engraved looks, or etching for recessed or tactile finishes.
Each printer type requires a different white PVC surface. Inkjet-optimized white PVC is designed for direct inkjet printing. Thermal transfer white PVC works with ID card printers and ribbon systems like Zebra and Matica. Ribbon-compatible white PVC is specifically formatted for color ribbon printers. UV-compatible white PVC is formulated for direct UV printing with white ink. Do not mix these surfaces—they are optimized for different equipment and ink systems. An inkjet-optimized card will not perform the same as a thermal transfer card, and mixing surfaces leads to feeding problems, poor ink adhesion, or color issues.
All special PVC finishes (black, holographic, brushed) are UV-only and should not be assumed compatible with inkjet or thermal transfer equipment. The PVC A4 sheet is currently available for inkjet-only workflows.
If you need to print full sheets and cut cards after printing, the PVC A4 sheet is currently available for inkjet printing only. No thermal transfer or UV route exists for A4 sheets. The workflow is straightforward: print the full sheet, let it dry completely, cut to your desired card size, and inspect the final result. If your project requires thermal transfer or UV printing, use pre-cut cards instead of A4 sheets.
All special PVC finishes—black, holographic, and brushed—are UV-only in this product range. Inkjet and thermal transfer printing are not available for these materials. Black PVC provides high contrast for white text and logos on a dark background. Holographic PVC creates a surface texture that affects how your design appears under light. Brushed PVC has a grain effect that works with your artwork. Before ordering, always request a physical sample showing your exact design printed on the actual material. This ensures the final look matches your expectations.
Metal blank cards offer three different finishing routes depending on your design goals. UV printing produces full-color graphics on the metal surface and works best for logos and artwork. Laser processing creates marked or engraved effects ideal for names, numbers, and variable data. Etching produces recessed or tactile finishes for raised or indented designs. Confirm the metal base material (aluminum, stainless steel, etc.) and which process suits your final design before production. The same metal base can be finished differently, so your process choice directly affects the appearance and durability of the final card.
If your card needs a chip (EMV, smart card), magnetic stripe, 4442/4428 slot, or dual-interface structure, confirm all structure details before production. You must verify the slot location and size, chip or antenna position, printer clearance to avoid damage, and print area limits to avoid the structure. Always test a real sample on your real equipment to ensure the printer feeds correctly and the print area is properly positioned away from the functional components.
